Grafton Pre-K has had an "appletastic" week! We have read many Apple Books, taste-tested red, green, and yellow apples, and graphed which one was our favorite. We ended the week by making homemade applesauce, which was Pre-K approved!

Spanish Classes Cook with Visitor from Central America On September 27, Spanish classes at JCHS took a break from the books for a fully immersive experience with a visitor from El Salvador who taught them to make a traditional dish from El Salvador called a “pupusa”. Las pupusas are a thick corn tortilla wrapped around a delicious ingredient of your choice that may include cheese, beans, pork, shrimp, squash or even flowers called loroco. It is served with a thin tomato sauce, pickled cabbage, or if you prefer a spicy medley of pickled peppers, cauliflower and onions. This tasty dish is thought to be over 2,000 years old, predating the colonization of the Americas, and today is eaten for breakfast or dinner throughout El Salvador, and wherever the Salvadoran diaspora is found today. The master chef for the endeavor was Salvadoran native and U.S. resident Maria Ines Orellana Larios, who is visiting her grandchildren here in Jerseyville. She says, “It makes me happy to share one of our best dishes with these beautiful young people. I think making pupusas might be a bit like making friends with people from other cultures, you have to be open to learning new things, maybe step out of your comfort zone and be patient.” Each student tried to make and eat a pupusa. JCHS freshman Maggie Alexander made a gorgeous golden pupusa. She commented “The pupusas were delicious, I wasn’t sure I would like them, but I enjoyed making them and eating them, and it was definitely a fun change from class.” JCHS senior, Lexi Trexler, also admits, "a mi me gustan las pupusas,” (I like pupusas!), and it was fun to learn to make this dish from a native Salvadoran. Maria Ines was great, and the experience was authentic and unique!. Several students went back for seconds, including senior, Sofia Hernandez-Lamer who has a special connection with the presenter. Sofia says, “My abuelita (grandmother) makes the best pupusas, we are so excited for her to visit!¨ JCHS Spanish teachers, Cara Rojas, Rachel Kallal and Andrea Lamer were excited to organize the day. “We are proud of our kids who are learning not only a new language, but developing better cultural awareness that will be critical for success in the future. It is important for our students to have positive immersive cultural experiences as they grow. We are planning many more to come! We would like to thank Maria Inez Orellana Larios for this amazing experience and Mrs. Galeana for helping us with supplies, support throughout the day and letting us use her kitchen classroom!”
